A vital part of our Bachelor of Fine Arts training sequence for theatre students is our professional internship program. Advanced BFA students' options include a year of study abroad or a year as an intern at one of these leading professional theatre companies:

Milwaukee Repertory Theater

The School of Theatre and Dance at SFA offers our students the opportunity to intern at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater, one of the premiere regional theatres in the country.

Each year, qualified students are selected by audition to be interns at Milwaukee Rep. As part of the internship, our students understudy major roles and are able to rehearse and perform with professionals in the Equity acting company.

Most MRT interns are actors, but some directors and stage managers have also spent their internship year at Milwaukee Rep.

The Guthrie Theater – Minneapolis

Students seeking a BFA degree in Stage Management may be chosen by interview to intern at this most prestigious theatre.

A giant of a figure, Tyrone Guthrie, gave the Minneapolis theatre an importance that others could not match when it opened in May 1963. The Guthrie is significant as the embodiment of his vision for a new kind of American theatre – a professional repertory company presenting classic works on a thrust stage away from the economic pressures of New York and Broadway.

It is a major cultural landmark in Minneapolis, the Twin Cities, the state, and the region. The Guthrie Theater is the flagship and prototype for the American regional theatre movement.

The Alley Theatre – Houston

This Tony Award-winning company is the leading theatre in the nation’s fourth-largest city. BFA candidates may interview for placement in a wide variety of Alley departments, working alongside top professionals in one of the largest, best equipped and most extensively staffed production centers in the U.S.

Students emphasizing technical theatre and design have worked in the Alley’s scene shop and backstage in its two theatres, while those concentrating on acting and directing have interned in the Education and Community Engagement office.

Internships also are available in arts administration, costume technology and construction, executive management, fundraising and grant writing, lighting and sound, marketing and communications, properties, production management and stage management.

A.D. Players – Houston

A. D. Players is a unique theatre company committed to producing plays and programs that uphold human values, offer creativity and promote literacy and education.

From a small group of part-time actors, the company has increased in size to one of Houston’s largest resident theatres, touching the lives of more than nine million people.

Arizona Theatre Company – Tucson/Phoenix

Arizona Theatre Company is recognized as one of the most dynamic theatres in the country. ATC has been cited as a national model for professional performing arts institutions.

The theatre now attracts some of the nation’s most respected and talented theatre professionals. BFA students from SFA have opportunities to serve as interns in a wide variety of areas with this distinguished theatre company.

Dallas Children’s Theater – Dallas

This children's theatre company is the largest professional not-for-profit family theatre in the Southwest and was ranked by Time magazine as one of the top five theaters for youth in the United States.

BFA students have a rare opportunity to intern in a variety of areas with this renowned company.

Theatre Three – Dallas

Theatre Three is the oldest professional theatre company in Dallas. They perform year-round with programming ranging from musicals to plays to productions for children.

Theatre Three won six Dallas Theater Critics Forum Awards in 1997. BFA students chosen for internships with Theatre Three serve in any number of capacities.

Opportunities for dance majors

As an alternative to internships, SFA promotes intensives and other immersive experiences for its dance students. Repertory members are required to attend a minimum of two professional dance concerts with a goal of networking and creating and maintaining connections to the professional world of dance.

A dance intensive provides an expanded experience for learning current and innovative techniques, opens doors for performance and teaching opportunities, and offers access to industry professionals from across the country.
